Ever lost a backup?

There was recently an incident where a backup tape was stolen from an employee's car. This is a real concern as every patient had to be notified that their confidential medical data was possibly compromised. While it's critical that your backups are taken offsite, they need to remain physically secure. In addition, we suggest encrypting the data on the backup media so the records cannot be accessed without decrypting it.

The encryption can be a simple password (please use a strong one) or you can utilise your HESA secure key, or a more secure, self-generated one. Either way, it's obviously important that you don't forget or lose your password or key. The result is that no matter what happens to your backup, your patient records cannot fall into the wrong hands.

Some encryption methods will increase your backup time, but this is a straight forward process. Please contact us to arrange to have your backup upgraded to a secure one.
